Do I Have a Dance Style? How to Develop It Without Getting Lost In Comparison
In today’s world, where everything is shared on social media, it’s easy to feel like you need to dance like everyone else in order to stand out.
But… what if your true power lies in dancing like yourself?
Have you ever wondered how dancers who didn’t have access to dance classes or social media were able to develop a style?
Well, in some ways, it was easier! Why? Because back then there weren’t so many distractions or comparisons. Dancers moved in smaller circles and had the space to go deeper into their own movement. Since they didn’t constantly showcase their work, they didn’t rely on likes, views, or followers to validate their creations.
Back then, originality was the goal. The most interesting thing was not dancing like anyone else.
🔸 We All Have a Style (Even If We Haven’t Refined It Yet)
So… does everyone have a style?
Absolutely! We all already have a unique way of moving. Just like we all express ourselves differently and have distinct personalities, those traits help define our style too.
I went through a phase where I just wanted to dance like the dancers I admired—until I realized I was losing my own voice. My movement didn’t feel like mine.
🔸 Learning from Others vs. Imitating Them
But how do I make my dancing look as good as the famous dancers I see online?
The truth is, even though we all have a style, not everyone takes the time to work on it or refine it. And a lot of times, instead of focusing on our own growth, we end up trying to dance like someone else.
Now don’t get me wrong—it’s not bad at all to learn from others or stay open to different perspectives. But what we learn should give us tools and expand our ability to express ourselves.
The idea is to be inspired by others in a way that helps you refine and evolve your own style—not to become a copy.
Because even though it’s possible (and sometimes intentional) to mimic someone else, doing that might mean missing the opportunity to express yourself in the unique way your body and mind are capable of.
And not only that—you’d also be taking away something valuable from the world: something only you can offer.
🔸 Reconnecting With Your Essence
I believe it’s important to remind ourselves of this on our artistic journey—and in life in general.
We spend so much time trying to keep up with others or meet external expectations, that we completely lose touch with who we are.
It’s essential to share, grow, and evolve—without losing our essence.
That disconnect from our body, our ideas, and our emotions is often what keeps us from developing our own style, personality, or path.
We have to give ourselves permission to feel, to explore, and to express who we truly are.
🔸 Finding Your Own Flow
As a teacher—not just of dance but of movement and wellness—my goal is to help my students find their own style: in life, in dance, and in movement.
I use my own style and the tools that have worked for me to help you find your flow.
And helping you actually helps me keep growing and refining the way I live, dance, and move.
I fully recognize that you are a unique being—and I’m here to celebrate that with you.
Thank you for reading this far.
I hope you’re enjoying the journey of discovering yourself through your dancing… and through your life.
When was the last time you danced in a way that only you can dance?
What if the style you’re searching for is already living inside you?
